Have been reading Eero Saarinen by Jayne Merkel, and came across this quote by his father, Eliel, who gave it as the reason he studied to become an architect in 1893:
Architecture had gone astray [and] something had to be done about it. It had gradually become the business of crowding obsolete and meaningless stylistic decoration on the building surfaces.
